On Tuesday, May 16 my class and I had to present on
the certain aspects of what a good speech is and what are the essential things
to include when delivering a speech. I was surprised by how much I was able to
learn. I realized that it’s not just talking but instead its communicating, the
effect our words have are powerful on others, the usage of words, the
pronunciation of words, and our body language. I was able to understand the
importance of a good speech from many different aspects from my fellow
classmates. They delivered great presentations and articulated themselves very
clearly, I look forward to seeing them present again. I gained a lot of tips
from my classmates, and they provided great examples of what they were
conveying. Stating that, I really enjoyed how when they were speaking it didn’t
some long and boring, instead they actually tried to interact with the class
and get down to a more personal feel by giving examples of what some of us may
experience in college. Hearing my classmates deliver their speech, it wasn’t
like reading a paper, they spoke clearly and really addressed what their main idea
was about. In my next presentation or the following speech I’ll give, I’ll make
sure to give myself just the right amount of time to highlight what my main
point is. I believe having a good sentence length with your words ensures that
your audience doesn’t get bored and really grasps what you’re trying to convey.
Each group had their own presentations, and might I say they were all very
different and unique. Their PowerPoints were fun and included lots of pictures
and videos, I particularly enjoyed this simply because there wasn’t much that I
had to read, instead my classmates went in depth of how the pictures and videos
relate to what they’re trying to discuss. I favored how each group was enrolled
in a certain chapter; I believe everyone liked this aspect because we were able
to focus on our chapters more deeply. Each chapter was different so all of us
had different discussions, this is another reason why I enjoyed everyone’s
presentation; they didn’t seem dragging. Each group was able to function in a
very organized matter and really focus on his or her chapter, that’s another
reason why I believe everyone’s presentation was delivered very efficiently.
Here I included a video of how it relates to a good
presentation and how I was able to grasp a presentation in a very positive way like
those my classmates presented:
HOW TO Give a Great
Presentation - 7 Presentation Skills and Tips to Leave an Impression - YouTube
This video goes into depth about key tips for giving an
efficient presentation and also helping those who tend to get nervous before a
speech. This video really illustrates how common it is for many of us to be anxious
before a speech and what many of us tend to do. I enjoy how this video included
some tactics for people to use. This brings me back to how good of a speech my
classmates gave. None of them seemed nervous nor did they make me question what
they were talking about.
Be a More Confident Public
Speaker - YouTube
Here is another video that really emphasizes the importance
of delivering a speech with a lot of confidence. I am able to learn more about
how my audience and myself will be more comfortable when I present.
This is my first time taking a speech class, so quite
frankly knowing that our first assignment was this presentation we did this
past Tuesday was quite nerve-wracking. I made sure to practice how I was going
to deliver my speech to my class, and I also took notes on flashcards so I can
remember things that I needed to clearly emphasize on. After delivering my
speech, I can honestly say I am more comfortable doing future presentations, I
have all the resources and notes to help me get through which is refreshing!
With that being said, I hope to improve my speech skills in the future because
I know as an adult in the work field this is crucial. These presentations that
are occurring in my speech class are setting me up for success and are benefiting
me in every way. I am looking forward to continuing to learn more about
improving my speech skills in and outside of my speech class. Not only am I
getting the practice but I’m learning from others as well. At first, I believed
that a speech was just about rambling words and throwing out many ideas, but in
reality, it's sort of a clear organized way of communicating with others in a
very professional manner. From this presentation that was done on Tuesday I was
able to take in so much, that being I was able to examine how my classmates
organized their points of views. All in all, each presentation was easy to
digest.
The video below supports why presentations may seem
nerve-wracking at first but it’s completely normal.
Public Speaking Anxiety
Tips: 6 Mindset Tips - YouTube
I
thoroughly enjoyed how each of my classmates were able to present such quality
presentations, expressing their interpretations of each chapter. I was able to
learn from both them and the chapter. I believe that the more my classmates and
I practice on our presentation skills, the more elite our presentations will
be. The benefit these presentations will give me is a head start to perform good in public spaces. I appreciated my classmates’ time as well as my teachers
for giving me a better feel on what speech is really about, I am able to get
the experience and have a better understanding of what it truly is about.
Stating this, I’m excited to see what our next presentation holds and how my
classmates and I will continually to expand and improve our knowledge in this field
of speech.
