Latara Bain Presentation Summary of Blogs

One of the best ways to stay organized when displaying information is to create a presentation.A presentation is a summary of important ideas of a topic  conducted by research.Additionally, it consists of pictures, words, and videos.

I am currently a second year student at Miami Dade College. I am pursuing a degree in Computer Science. One of the three classes that I am taking this semester is Introduction to Public Speaking or SPC 2608-2235-5988 by professor Sinkoff. Our first major assignment was to create a PowerPoint or Google slides presentation using only pictures or videos. The pictures or videos are supposed to explain the topic and it has to be self explanatory. To execute this presentation , we were placed into three groups divided by at least eleven of different classmates together. Each classmate or group  was instructed to complete at least three sides of the presentation. The presentation was divided by the different chapters in our class textbook. The first group was in charge of completing their presentation based on chapters one through chapter four, group two had chapters five through nine, and group three had chapters ten through twelve.

Group one presentation was mainly an introduction of ideas for the next two groups. Additionally, it included ideas on the creation of a presentation and everything that was well needed to keep it organized. The main topics of group one presentation include: Life skills, components of communication, message channel, the five Cano, speech ideas preparation, searching for a topic, evaluating topics, purposes of speeches, work and career. To give a great speech, it takes a well-organized presentation of ideas along with connection to the audience. It is important to have a well-planned out idea and a well thought of way to present it. Each presentation is meant to be clear therefore it is important that everything is distraction free in the room. Plagiarism does exist. When conducting your research, every resource or information written by someone else needs to be cited. There is nothing wrong with asking for outside help but always remember that it may be more accurate if the information came directly from a well-supported source. Well supported sources are usually books, and articles.  The five Cano when preparing for a speech includes: invention, understanding, delivery, organization, and style. Invention is determining the information that will be presented, understanding is fully knowing the ideas that will be presented, delivery is having the correct tone and posture when presenting, organization is having a well thought out planned, and style is to make sure the presentation is grammatically correct along with it being precise. There are three types of speeches which include: informative, persuasive, and special occasion speech. An example of an informative speech is the teacher explaining ideas and new information to a class, persuasive speech usually includes talking about an event that was highly enjoyable by yourself, and special occasion speech is birthday speech. The importance of being well organized or having a strong speech is to prevent mistakes and to help every point be conveyed to the audience in the correct way.

Group two was the group that I was assigned too, we talked more in dept of the different ways to outline a presentation, and the best ways for it to be executed. Three principles of outlining are subordination, division and parallelism. Subordination is usually when the main heading is more emphasizes the supporting ideas or topics. There are a variety of ways to differentiate between the two ideas. Always remember that sometimes the simplest way may just be the most readable one for the audience. Division consists of keeping everything organized to maintain a specific organization structure. Parallelism can be pattern to help the organization make perfect sense to the audience that is reading or listening to the presentation. The preparation outline is one of the most time-consuming parts of a presentation because it takes a dedicated amount of time towards finding the perfect evidence to support each idea. Also, it is helpful if a more experienced person can give their opinion on the topic or the assignment. Tutors are available and therefore should be one of the most reliable sources that each student relies on. Staying motivated will be hard but it was well necessary. Using quotation marks and having a way to present a topic that does not come as boring is necessary for any presenter. There are different ways to present, always choose the way that works best and that is most comfortable for you. The idea of memorizing along with using notes is helpful because it helps you to remain engaged along with showing that you actively know what you are presenting. Pictures are always best to include in a presentation. It avoids boredom and it is a demonstration of the ideas that are being presented by the presenter.

Group three mainly discussed the different kinds of ways that the information can be useful for the audience in the future. The five principles of learning are built on the unknown, using humor, using sensory aids, organizing information and rewarding each listener. This will attract the listeners and they will remember at least one topic from the presentation that was presented to them. Also, if possible, the presenter can engage in active discussion among the listeners. This is where they would become involved and would feel much more comfortable when asking a question. The purpose of giving a speech is to inform, to persuade, to have knowledge sharing, to entertain, and to invite. All good well executed speeches include a great form of preparation, organization, and inclusion of the audience. Every presenter’s goal should be for the audience to be able to remember what was presented to them.

In conclusion, presentations are not as easy as it may appear.  In my opinion, I truly enjoyed the Group three presentation simply because the topics were more interesting to me, and everyone did their best to present it to the class. In the future, I hope I will be able to become much better at presentations and presenting based on the facts that were illustrated in class.

  1. Very good reflection! I am sure you will feel more confident and "together" after each presentation.
